Dr Jacobs, just curious, any updates on the books you currently have in production? I remember reading a while ago that there are two of them. Much needed from an Eastern Orthodox perspective.

Hi Jack,

I presume you're asking about my Leibniz book, which I posted in pieces here on Substack as I was writing it. That volume is coming out this year with Routledge. (It was originally contracted with Cambridge, but the press and I had irreconcilable differences concerning the final shape and content of the book, so I pulled it and took it to Routledge instead.)

I'm not sure what you have in mind by the second book; I have several conceived and in the queue. Perhaps I said something about my Leibniz book being the first in several on the problem of evil -- which is true.

If that's the source of your question, I do plan to follow up the Leibniz book with one that offers an Eastern patristic theodicy. However, I'm not sure if I'll start there or, first, write my volume on the metaphysics of God and creatures in the Eastern Church fathers, essentially a systematic breakdown of Eastern patristics metaphysics. I've had that one on the docket for a while, and it would be a useful prelude to the work on theodicy. However, the metaphysics book is not, strictly speaking, required for the theodicy book.

We shall see. First things first, I need to make some revisions to my Leibniz book before it goes to press. That should be off my plate at the close of March. Perhaps I should survey my readers about which of my conceived books should be front loaded.

Thanks for your question -- and for your support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jacobs

Thank you for your speedy reply. Concerning your comment:

That is the book I would personally be more interested in. Although I did wonder what had happened to your book on Leibniz, glad to see it's still going to be published.

Books on the eastern patristic metaphysical breakdown of reality are far and few between and not always written from an educated Eastern Orthodox perspective. Von Balthasar had his "Cosmic Liturgy" about Maximus the Confessor and James R. Payton Jr wrote "Light from the Christian East" but neither were Orthodox. Staniloae's books are back in print but he and Lossky (to name someone else) still seem to be largely unknown and weren't writing for a modern American audience. So I'm very glad you still plan on writing your own, because a hole needs to be filled.

-Jack
